LORD, Teach us to Pray -(part 2)

This week we are looking at Jonah's prayer.

8 "Those who cling to worthless idols
forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation comes from the LORD."

10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. (2:8-10)

Kevin DeYoung on Family

This is a sermon by Kevin DeYoung on “Jesus’ Real Family,” from Mark 3:31-35, preached 2-14-10 at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan.

(Download.)

Kevin argues that there are two broad competing views of the family in our culture: (1) family as straight-jacket; and (2) family as center. He shows that Jesus presents a third way—something different. In exegeting Mark 3:31-35 he shows us three surprises in Jesus’ theology of the family: (1) family ties don’t get you in; (2) family doesn’t come first; and (3) God’s family is open to all.

Kevin closes by addressing three kinds of people: (1) those who seem to have it all together, with nice families and good family values; (2) those who face the difficult decision of whether to please their parents or follow God; and (3) those who wonder if they can really be a part of God’s family, given their family background.
