Community Service on Sat Oct 31st from 9 am to noon
It all started from a prayer...A small group of people, concerned with the less-fortunate of Champaign-Urbana, came together and prayed about how to best minister to the lost, the addicted and the afflicted living among us.On March 15, 1993 Restoration Urban Ministries opened its doors, handing out food without prejudice. Underestimating the depth of the issues, we were swamped with over 100 families seeking support during the first week alone. So many times we take things for granted, not realizing that there are hungry people fighting to survive and take care of their family right here in our community.

Tullian Tchividjian comments on a reliable preacher
Tullian asks 5 questions.
Question 1 (Sola Scriptura): Does the preacher ground everything he says in the Bible?
Question 2 (Sola Gratia): Does the preacher freely emphasize that because of sin, a right relationship with God can only be established by God’s grace alone?
Question 3 (Sola Fide): Does the preacher stress that salvation is not achieved by what we can do, rather salvation is received by faith in what Christ has already done?
Question 4 (Sola Christus): Does the preacher underline that Christ is the exclusive mediator between God and man?
Question 5 (Sola Deo Gloria): Does the preacher exalt God above all?

Reaching the Next Generation: Amaze Them With God
Give them a God who is holy, independent, and unlike us, a God who is good, just, full of wrath and full of mercy. Give them a God who is sovereign, powerful, tender, and true. Give them a God with edges. Give them an undiluted God who makes them feel cherished and safe, and small and uncomfortable too. Give them a God who works all things after the counsel of his will and for the glory of his name. Give them a God whose love is lavish and free. Give them a God worthy of wonder and fear, a God big enough for all our faith, hope, and love.

Human Development is a development paradigm that is about much more than the rise or fall of national incomes. It is about creating an environment in which people can develop their full potential and lead productive, creative lives in accord with their needs and interests. People are the real wealth of nations.
Here are notable rankings:
1. Norway
13. US
26. South Korea
Next to the last -181. Afghanistan
The last one -182. Niger
Not in the list:
Iraq and North Korea.
We believe that the gospel of Jesus is salvation for everyone who believes. We like to measure the gospel ranking among nations. Perhaps we can do salvation index among nations.
New Research Explores How Different Generations View and Use the Bible
Some terms to describe different generations:
- the Mosaic generation refers to adults who are currently ages 18 to 25
- Busters are those ages 26 to 44
- Boomers are 45 to 63
- and Elders are 64-plus.
Bible Appetite – Despite the generational decline in many Bible metrics, one departure from the typical pattern is the fact that younger adults, especially Mosaics (19%), express a slightly above-average interest in gaining additional Bible knowledge. This compares with 12% of Boomers and 9% of Elders.
Jerry Park also told me that a lot of young U of I students are open to his invitation to study the Bible.

2 decades of marriage and going strong
I have been married two decades. But I learned three thing from my marriage.1. "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst." (1 Tim 1:15). I thank God for his saving grace through his Son, Jesus.
2. "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." (Prov 31:10) I thank God for gracing me with a woman of noble character.
3. "Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate". (Psalm 127: 3-5) May God grant us many young men who can contend for the gospel of our LORD Jesus. I see the importance of raising young men as disciples of Jesus.
The other day my mother reminded me that my father came to the USA at my age now, 47. She encouraged me to learn America and love American students. She did not say to eat Big Macs, which was my father's sandwich. That day, I went to McDonald had a Happy meal and cried for the grace of our LORD Jesus who called me as his servant, not because I was good but because he had great hope on me.
From 2 Samuel 5-6, I learned that David served his people for 40 years. By God's grace if he wills, I have two more decades to serve. I am reaching my half way point this year. May God help me to finish well the second half by God's grace and learn to serve American students with the word of God.
Jesus our advocate and propitiator (1 John 2:1-2)

Marriage dance
Christianity today featured a article called, "Lord of the wedding dance," in response to Kevin and Jill's wedding dance.
Some excerpts:
Marriage is "a covenantal association of the entire community", wherein the pastor, families, witnesses and the couple commit to a contract before God.
While no Christians want to omit God from the wedding guest list, many weddings do so functionally by drawing attention to all the wrong things. More time is devoted to the processional than the vows. Vows are made up toe reflect the couple's individuality rather than scriptural wisdom or church teaching on marriage.
We are living in this world but we are not of this world. We can be unfashionable different from the world. We are different. We think differently. We even marry differently from the world. We celebrate our difference. Our only difference is that we build our marriage on the atoning sacrifice of our LORD Jesus. (1 John 1:1-2)
What do you think?

New creed among teenagers
Smith and Denton conducted extensive interviews with 267 American teenagers, and concluded that a new religion had emerged in America whose chief tenets are as follows:
- A God exists who created and orders the world and watches over human life on earth.
- God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.
- The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
- God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
- Good people go to heaven when they die.

Commitment as a medical missionary
I’ve learned that, as a medical missionary, the days are far too rigid, far too demanding, far too exhausting, far too taxing to not commence and conclude the day with God.
As we do God's work, how do we start the day and end the day? We start with God and end with God. It is not easy but it is our life source. It is easy to say but difficult to do. We need God's grace each day.
Some of us are reading the Bible. In this way, we learn to do with God's word, not our own strength.
Mark Driscoll on Idols
Mark Driscoll on Nightline sat down for the half-hour interview, and drove around Seattle with Terry Moran.
Driscoll sought to make the following points, according to Justin Taylor.
- Idols take. Jesus gives.
- Idols destroy life. Jesus gives new life.
- Idols break apart people and relationships. Jesus redeems and heals
Here is the video.
As we study 1 John, please note the last verse -5:21. We, children of God, must flee from idols. We need to run to Jesus in this idol saturated world and live as a light to darkness. Idols can blind us so we need Jesus' light and especially his atoning sacrifice for our sins.
The Nightline report was fair but made one mistake. He said that Mark's theology was in an emergent stream but he is emerging, not emergent. See this video for more info. Other than that, this was a good journalism.
2 Samuel Study
The Key Verses are 7:12–13.
“When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever."
Pray for the staff members to study and learn of God's desire to bring his kingdom to us.

Science Versus Religion? The Insights and Oversights of the “New Atheists”
One of my favorite history professors in college wrote a well-written article refuting the "New Atheists." This professor wrote me a letter of recommendation for medical school that helped me get into medical school. You can see why, when you read his article, because he writes so well, though I'm not sure if I understand all his arguments.
This is a good read. Here is the link.
In addition, those who want to explore this topic, you can get more at the recent article from New Yorker.
New atheist is not that new. As Solomon said, "There is nothing new under the sun."

Multi colored method of reading the Bible
Abe Song who is a junior is reading the Bible carefully.
I like this multi color apporach to read it carefully. Pray for him to grow as a servant of God's word. Here is is sample marking with different colors. He marked the text (1 John 2:1-11) and worked on the text.
1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for[a] the sins of the whole world.
3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God's love[b] is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him[c] to make him stumble. 11But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.Deep Church by Jim Belcher
1. Ed Stetzer's interview with Jim Belcher
2. Kevin DeYoung's review on this book.
What is church? This is a very good question as we do church ministry. Specifically it is very relevant to us since we will focus on the house church at our staff conference in Oct, 09. We have to get church right.
Our Evangelical brothers are struggling and working to articulate what church is. This is a very encouraging sign that we are struggling to know what God's intention for the church is.
For me the best place to look to find is the Bible and go to the primary source. Of course we need to contextualize the gospel but we cannot revise the gospel.
We need much God's wisdom to do church in our own context and be faithful to our mission. (Matt 28, Rom 1:5)
